VOIPxCellular Free phone calls placed using VOIP, 802.11, and open source based directories of VOIP targets will severely cut into cellular phone service providers'''''''' revenue. Cell networks won''''''''t go away - many near-future phones (such as one from Motorola to be released early 2005) will be multimode to allow cellular connections whenever 802.11 is unavailable. But a significant portion of non-land-line phone calls will be free and will use VOIP+802.11 phones. Governments may release other radio frequency bands under the same terms as the current 802.11 band and for the purposes of this prediction, those count as 802.11. Prediction: The number of VOIP+802.11 based calls made in a month in some US city with population over 300,000 will exceed of the number of regular cell phone calls that month in that city by the execution date. |
