There are a group of people hired by the government
to analyze the future through trends called futurists.
They help decision makers in government organizations
to be ready for and take advantage of upcoming changes.
They identify trends and issues that will require responsibilty.
They will look at long range consequences of actions and
decisions. They will come up with ways to how we can
respond today to the different possible futures. They can
also imagine preferred futures.
Another part of their job would be to know what we have to
do to balance the needs of the present generation to that
of the future's.
So by analyzing trends we can have a better idea of
what the future will be and adapt to it to our benefit.
You would hope gambling would be less in the future rather than more. It is really just a false hope. You're throwing away good money after bad money. Your high is your next low in the gambling world. This is true for drug use also. You're being lied to by he supplier of the high.
This is my first post, so apologies for any breach of unknown netiquette.
I worked with John and Patricia in the 1980's, right after they finished Megatrends. We worked on a book together called "Reinventing the Corporation." The book got mixed reviews, but as I read it now, the predictions were right on, as were the recommendations for preparing organizations for life in the information age.
This is one case where it is good to be 20 years ahead of your time.
John and Patricia have gone their separate ways, but both are extraordinary futurists, and I would be comfortable with them advising the government, although I fear some of it would be the equivalent of casting pearls before swine.
