I don't have tons of knowledge about AIs, but I know the basic concepts.
In order for a computer, or network to function as an AI it needs to be able to learn new pathways of thinking. In otherwords, it has to be able to adjust it's program without being told to adjust it's program.
To some this seems like an absurd grouping of words. In order for the first AI to be created, someone would have to write a program that told it how to learn. Therefore, the AI is created as a learning program that then makes modifications to it's programming to learn new things and correct any mistakes in false data (as it was programmed to do.)
So maybe AI is a misnomer, but let's assume an AI is born this way. What is it's learning curve? We don't trust humans to drive a car until they are 16, and then only under the condition that they go through some mildly intensive training to use it. And even then we don't really trust them to have learned these issues until they are approximately 25 (using the insurance institute's age for adjustment of rates). Therefore will we first make a AI learn how to drive and react by processing years worth of human driving data and learning from the mistakes that humans make.
In order to do all this we'll have to start including black boxes on cars that get removed and downloaded every day for analysis.

As Murray Gell-Mann has said AI is a complex adaptive system. The complex adaptive system is able to take information from the environment and its own interaction with the environment and simplify the regularities in that information into what Gell-Mann calls a "schema." The schema is a kind of model that the complex adaptive system uses to determine its action in the real world. And the various schemata AI's are evolving are actually competing with each other. AI is a complex adaptive system.
