Copper Bullion
Posted by Nick on 01-Jul-2005 - Day(s) left: 1412
1690 people have seen this prediction.
Now that the copper value of US pennies minted before 1982 has become more than the face value (one cent) people will start hoarding.

At some point the government will call them out of circulation and people will be able to cash in on their copper pennies.

It has even been proposed removing pennies altogether; that we simply no longer need them.

I don't see that happening!

But according to the government there will be a new Lincoln cent in 2009 in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.

Since the copper in pennies is an alloy it is not worth what a pure copper would be. It is doubtful that copper pennies will ever become valuable enough that the government would want to recall them. It just wouldn't be profitable enough.

Just saw someone on television saying just this: we don't need pennies!
