Predictions : Our Society and Culture : US Brain Drain
US Brain Drain
Posted by BriPom on 09-Nov-2004 - Day(s) left: 2507
636 people have seen this prediction.
As the U.S. political mood shifts further to the right, those on the left (and even in the center) will feel marginalized and even persecuted. As a result, many will attempt to emigrate to Canada, Australia and other relatively affluent, English-speaking countries. Many of these will be the "best and brightest" in the arts, sciences and technology, with skills that are in demand worldwide. As a result, the U.S. will face a talent crisis, and will need to re-position itself as the premier place to work and do business.

They've been do*****enting a similar phenomenon in Australia for years now. A brain drain that began when a left wing party was in power for over a decade. Though the reason for the Australian exodus was less political and more practical - there simply isn't the market to offer these people jobs. So all the best brains, creators, thinkers and artists head overseas where there is an infrastructure that can allow them to fully realise their potential.

As disgusted as I am with the recent political results in both Australia and the US I feel the intelligencia will stick it out for more 4 years to see what happens rather than uproot, resign from valued jobs and start afresh. There is also hope that the grassroots movement that began for this US election will bear fruit for the next election - see Kevin Powell's excellent essay on this : http://www.vibe.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=505&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0
