In a world which is growing increasily concerned with ecological issues, I think it is time for us to discuss a radical shift in publication methodologies. This has more to do with the medium than it has to do with the published material, although we will discuss this later, as well.
Ordinary books are printed in paper, causing deforestion and pollution during it''''s manufacturing. If this was not enough to make us think on ways to avoid it, we could also mention a number of economical difficulties that arise from normal publishing:
1) A x number of copies is printed, without many guaranties that all of them will be sold.
2) In order to sold x copies of a given book, it is necessary to have a fairly complex structure assuring marketing, shipping, distribution, sales, etc...
3) When the books are in a warehouse, they tend to deteriorate a little, rendering them less profitable.
An alternative way to publish books, which is both ecological and economical, is on the internet, providing a fast and globally accessible reading place, capable also of generating sales. As to the content itself, internet also provides a wide new set of tools able to cause a revolution on the reader''''s habits. One of these tools, that might be of great value for students or researchers, is the ability to search specific content within a given text, thus agilizing the time required to reach an understanding.
