The study you refer didn't explore the reasons behind, but I have my small 2 cents that are translated in one word: ENVY!

High freedom: everyone thinks richness is or is going to be distributed by everyone.

No freedom: everyone accepts the fact that rich people have all the richness.

Intermediate freedom: everyone wants the richness from other people.

Let us analyse this problem rationally.
Before we can relate "Terrorism" to anything at all we need to define it.
What is the definition of a terrorist?
I assume that it should mean to be a name of a person who instigates terror into the hearts of others.
Well, a burglar or a rapist must be a terrorist by that definition, so why were they not called terrorist from before?
Another root of that title was found by research to have originated in the Islamic holy book.
It says something like "Prepare for them every power you can prepare to terrorise God's enemy and yours"
The word "Enemy" is quite significant here because terrorists are acting under a context of war.
In the past we have heard the title of "Gorillas" given to jungle warriors, so what can we call martyrs who sacrifice their own soul while inflicting great damage to those whom they consider to be an enemy? Terrorists of course.
The absence of personal gain disqualifies them from being criminals by definition of the law.
This leaves us with few clues for detectives to work on.
Every crime must have a motivation.
In Medieval times there was a curse of retaliation between families, typically portrayed in the play of Romeo and Juliet.
Now we are blessed by the dominance of the law and the protection of dedicated police men from criminals.
We do not retaliate for ourselves but we let the law do that for us to stop the blood cycle.
In the absence of the law and a national protection, and in response to genocide, the oppressed must lose every reason to carry on with their lives.
They lose their dignity and every human right and they are left with nothing but to commit suicide.
Those whom we call terrorists must think that it would be more than reasonable to become a martyr rather than sinning by taking away their lives.
Then what is it that have created the terrorists other than oppression, double standards and severe injustice?
Poverty! I do not think so.
Super freedom! Not at all.
Oppression and the consequent despair? Most probably.
So what is it that we can do to stop terrorism?
Any thoughts?

I think there is a deep rooted link between terrorism and poverty. The poverty struck regions are prone to be easy victims of terrorism. It is the circumstances that groom a person to his ultimate personality.
Invariably it is the poor Nations that are the illiterate ones as well, not being mature in thinking; these are more susceptible to the temptation of taking what is not given to them rightfully. This temptation is not necessarily one that craves economic benefits; it can be a desperate thought to kill before being killed!

First of all I would like to clarify that it is an Islamic teaching to obey the laws of the country you live in (be it the land of your origin, or otherwise). To be involved in illegal activities or any attempt to undermine the government of the country is contradictory to the teachings of Islam. Therefore, such activities are unlawful according to Islam and if a person does not comply with the teachings of the religion he professes to follow then it’s the fault of the person rather than that of the religion!
I agree with Hemetis, it is the oppression that drives people to take the desperate measures like suicide bombing and kidnappings etc.
I think the only lasting solution to this problem is to give the desperate people relief by giving them their basic human rights and providing solutions to the political disputes that create this feeling of hopelessness.

I differ on the point of terrorism being sprung from envy. When I talk of terrorism, I talk about the global wave of terror established by organized terror. I think envy can be ONE cause of this wave, but on the whole poverty and illiteracy play just as important a role as envy. But the root cause is the oppression that the helpless people are being subjected to. The masterminds of terror therefore find people desperate enough to resort to suicide bombing!
