Can someone predict, when our global civilisations shall stop using fissile fuel for empowering the transportation vehicles? I am under the impression that it shall be a painfully gradual process that takes over one hundred years from now.

I think It's going to be a long time coming. It appears big business/ govt is looking for the 1 new power source, maybe so it can be regulated/ controlled better. I think the future is in multi-alternative fuels depending on your location. If you live in a sunny climate- go solar; windy- wind power, natural gas underground- go thermal. We need to get away from the transport of power and have the power close to the user.

I never had hydrogen in mind when I was inquiring about the end of fossil fuel domination.
In fact, natural gas proved to be the cheapest horse-power per cubic volume, and diesel then gasoline comes next. If due to our technological advances an exceptionally economic method of producing electricity was found, then the benefits of building personal electric highways would be fantastic.
Less or no accidents could happen because traffic can be controlled by simply disconnecting power from the acceleration source while keeping that of the brakes source. No Italian zigzag driving anymore and each driver would be confined to his lane. A totally new set of traffic laws would be constructed and robotic equipment for fast maintenance of out of order cars.
Solar and wind power along with the classic water falls and dams would be the main source of power.
The idea is sort of personalising the underground into an over-ground version.
In the future, a driver would need to punch in his destination and uplink with the traffic main frame, and then the traffic computer would calculate the best entry and street-root to take. Perhaps just like science fiction movies, the vehicles shall be robotized and do all the driving.

One thing is for sure, that I would never live long enough to see it come true.
