Perhaps one of the most critical advances in technology is Robotics.
Robotics is extremely dependant on advances in electronics and material engineering as much as software programming.
I am estimating a constant increase in human dependency on robotic enhancements of manufacturing plants.
Robots are assigned the toughest of jobs and the health hazardous ones too.
Car painting and welding lines are well known to employ a great percentage of robots being produced today.
Deep sea rescue missions and deep space missions too are just the tip of the berg where robots are critically essential.
My prediction is that almost every new manufacturing corporation shall seriously consider employing robots for their mass production lines.
Packaging industry, home and office furniture carpentry, ceramics, metallurgy, mining and clothing industry are some of the very clear industries in need of robotic enhancements.

Robotics does not necessarily imply a humanoid in shape, but rather implies automated control and friendly modes of operation.
Some robotic "arms" are equipped with a learning mode such that an expert can teach the robotic machine what to do when triggered by significant events.
This feature is implemented because occasionally it is impossible to program in writing, every move a robot must do when a transducer reports the presence of a substrate. The expert holds the hand of a robotic arm and performs the task while the robot records every coordinate along the time scale of the substrate conveyer.
While mannequins are used in fashion shop windows today, I predict that some would introduce moving mannequins and then humanoids that would be constantly demonstrating fashion in the windows in a lively simulation.
Home assistants shall not be popular in humanoid forms but rather in fully computerised and automated kitchen, bathroom, laundry and etcetera.

Car consumer robotic features shall include crash prevention by including proximity transducers that override the fuel throttle and stops the engine.

Automated vendors too shall improve drastically in the coming decade and might hand out cash or drinks for a car driver while seated in his car.

I agree with you, I think there is technology out there now that is surpressed by mass production of other products that lead to a conservative view too late. I have alot of respect for the japanese mentality of manufacturing these days, they see that technology is rapidly changing, so instead of mass producing electronic devices they make a few because they are aware of continuing advancement and realize over producing is a step backwards.

I think that programming robots to learn and deal with potential issues goes hand in hand with the versatility and dynamics that would be needed for the future as well as the upgrade ability.

I also concur, robotics is a very important science, on that can serve so many purposes and become so widely used it will become one of, if not the largest scientific area of research. Im a newbie when it comes to robotics, but I know enough about it to safely say it will be important to future technology.
