Car painting and welding lines are well known to employ a great percentage of robots being produced today.
Deep sea rescue missions and deep space missions too are just the tip of the berg where robots are critically essential.
My prediction is that almost every new manufacturing corporation shall seriously consider employing robots for their mass production lines.
Packaging industry, home and office furniture carpentry, ceramics, metallurgy, mining and clothing industry are some of the very clear industries in need of robotic enhancements.

I agree with you, I think there is technology out there now that is surpressed by mass production of other products that lead to a conservative view too late. I have alot of respect for the japanese mentality of manufacturing these days, they see that technology is rapidly changing, so instead of mass producing electronic devices they make a few because they are aware of continuing advancement and realize over producing is a step backwards.
I think that programming robots to learn and deal with potential issues goes hand in hand with the versatility and dynamics that would be needed for the future as well as the upgrade ability.
I also concur, robotics is a very important science, on that can serve so many purposes and become so widely used it will become one of, if not the largest scientific area of research. Im a newbie when it comes to robotics, but I know enough about it to safely say it will be important to future technology.
