Does anyone here follow the anime series and has seen both movies? I think it has an interesting view of the future. The distinction between human intelligence and robotic AI is subtle. What is human has a matrix or code that is called a Ghost, whether it is in a human body or not! Robots seem to be deliberately made less then human even though the technology to make them more exists. However the Tachikomas seem to cross the border even though they were design not to be individualists.
The story plot however seems to sway completely away from human sexual relationships other than the very Hot body of Major Motoko Kusanagi, murderous rapists or the exploitation of robots for cheap sex and the passing mention of Togusa's wife and kid. The reason for this could be for marketing reasons since animation in the United States really only appeals to kids. However I haven't seen every episode so I could be wrong, maybe the Major has a few flings.
