As you know we are always paying very close attention to
what's going on the world of OS's. Thus, here's an update with some of the
novelties being talked around lately:
 |
Longhorn is beginning to look real
nice in 3D. The top-of-the-line interface, code-named "Aero Glass,"
will have transparency and other advanced three-dimensional shading
features, like drop shadows and animated transactions. (Notice on the
photo the animation due to minimization of windows and the drop shadow
effect that makes them look like they are one on top of the other) This
will demand a high-end video card with at least 64MB of video memory,
DirectX 9.0 support, AGP 4X for external graphics cards and a Longhorn
graphics driver. The definitive place to visit for the latest
information on Longhorn is Paul Thurrott's
Winsupersite. |

It's not really an OS news, but how
about running Mac's Os X on your PC, on top of Windows XP?
Believe it or not it's for real! However, don't get too much excited.
For now it's horrible slow and very unstable to be put to real usage.
It's called PearPC, and you can check all the info and download it on
the sourceforge page.
With the promise of running better and faster in the future, the
actual version emulates a G3 chip minus its AltiVec extension and
supports Mandrake Linux and Darwin.A great discuss on
the topic is going on at
Neowin, but the best place to discuss it is at
Emaculation. |

My best wishes of great success as to
go to MorphOS. It originally started in 1995 as a plan to migrate the
marvelous, fantastic, brilliant and revolutionary for the time
AmigaOS to PowerPC but eventually ‘morphed’ into an entire Operating
System in it’s own right which includes compatibility with Amiga
applications. It aims PowerPC RISC microprocessors which runs on the
Pegasos boxes and PowerUP expansion cards for the Amiga. In the future
MorphOS will also run on other Open Firmware based PowerPC machines and
possibly some PowerPC based Apple Macintosh computers as well. As before
with AmigaOS, the idea now is to create a genuinely NEW and thus truly
modern, highly advanced operating system.
Go check it out. |

Last, but not least, have you ever
heard about Linux? Sure you did. But I guess you always thought to
yourself: too much trouble to install and I am not willing to go messing
around with my HDisk.Well I have a solution for you. Only 1 CD burning,
3 minutes to boot (almost a no installation) and you are running
Linux from the CD without touching your precious HDisk, with
OpenOffice and net connection. Cool, isn't it? I sure would like to see
Windows XP do that... Although there are a couple of packages out there
to do this, I prefer Mandrake Move.Give
it a try. It's free. |
