The Future of Robotic-Humanoids is here
Manchester develops vision chip for new generation of 'human' robots (17 May, 2005)
The "REVERB" project, which involves BAE Systems and a number of other leading UK Universities, is aimed at developing new technologies which will enable robots to respond to events and multi-task in similar ways to humans and animals.
As part of the project The University of Manchester will develop a state of the art Vision Chip.
"The Vision Chip will be based on the retina of the human eye and will work in a similar way giving the robot excellent peripheral and central vision. Like the human eye, the Chip will process very complex images at rapid rates filtering them through to the robot's brain and enabling it to react in real time."
The aim of the REVERB project is to unravel how the vertebrate brain copes with the action-selection problem. Read more...

Most probably REVERB stands for Robotic Enhanced VERtebral Brain with emphasis on the capital letters.
Some philosophers had concluded that a sense is defined by what it can do, thus an eye is a device that can see.
Also, in neurological sciences, an increased inclination towards the belief that vision is not centralised implies that a great part of the sense takes place in the neural network before reaching the cortical region of the brain to integrate the information.
By developing such sophisticated transducers to encapsulate vision, audion, touch, smell and taste plus a dozen of physical quantity sensors like temperature and pressure etc., the road to building Robotic Humanoids becomes much shorter and wider. There shall be many problems standing yet, such as gravitational field relative positioning, motorized limbs' control and feedback issues. On the other hand many critical decisions must be made, such as the energy cycle and symmetrical design aspects. What algorithm can replace awakening! Shall the hard problem of consciousness be solved?
What I believe is going on with the REVERB project is that rather than speculation, they wish to build all the abilities into a human-mimicking system and observe what unfolds.
